SASEBO, Japan – More than 40 Sailors and family members participated in the second “Take Back the Night” walk to raise awareness for sexual assault at Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS), April 5.

Several CFAS organizations helped with the planning of the event including the CFAS sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR) team, multi-cultural committee, fire department and Morale Welfare and Recreation office.

“As a medical officer and a SAPR victim advocate, I think events like these are important because it educates members of the community on the effects of sexual assault,” said Lt. Stephanie Dailey, a guest speaker at the event. “I hope ‘Take Back the Night’ empowers victims to come forward and makes them feel like they truly do have a support system here at CFAS.”

Command Master Chief Christopher Stone and the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Sarah Gibbs kicked off the event with a reading of a SAPR proclamation, which outlined CFAS’ role in bystander intervention.

“It’s really great to see Sailors of all ranks out here standing up against sexual assault and showing the community that we are all here to support each other,” said Logistics Specialist 3rd class Rosanna Iribar.

Once the proclamation was read, the participants began the mile long march through the streets of CFAS carrying a sign that read “Shatter the Silence, Stop the Violence”. During the last leg of the march, participants walked in silence to show support for those affected by sexual assault.

“We demonstrated solidarity tonight as a community by participating in this walk,” said Dailey. “At the end of the day, the event was all about empowering those that have been affected by sexual assault, and I think that we did a great job of showing our support.”

According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, a person is sexually assaulted every two minutes in the United States; resulting in more than 237,000 victims each year.

April is sexual assault awareness month and CFAS’ awareness campaign is designed to reduce the threat of sexual violence from within the ranks and provide safe environments for Sailors at all levels.
