RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Col. Robin Jones assumed command of the 304th Sustainment Brigade from Col. Scott R. Swanson, who had led the brigade for three years, in a change of command ceremony at the March Air Reserve Base, Riverside, Calif., April 6.
Jones, a native of Colorado, began his military career in October 1986 when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant from the University of Idaho ROTC program; a distinguished military graduate. He is a graduate of the Ordnance, Air Defense and the Transportation Officer Advanced Courses.
“I look forward to leading you for the next few years,” said Jones. “I am ready to achieve the goal of ensuring that this unit can accomplish any mission that they are called upon.”
Distinguished guests included Brig. Gen. Kenneth Jones, 451st Expeditionary Sustainment Command commanding general, Maj. Gen. Megan Tatu, 79th Sustainment Support Command commanding general, and Brig. Gen. Scottie Carpenter, 311th ESC CG, who would transfer the unit colors to the incoming brigade commander.
The ceremony began with the traditional ceremonial pageantry. The standing unit was summoned to order arms. The audience stood for the Presentation of the Colors and Honors, and the unit was brought to present arms, then to parade rest. Then, the official party made an inspection of the troops. These displays of uniformity were executed with discipline and precision.
Swanson, the outgoing commander, thanked everyone present, especially the Soldiers of the brigade for their contribution to his command saying, “It has been a rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, leading you for the last three years.”
The core of the ceremony was the formal transfer of authority and responsibility. The command sergeant major of the 304th SBDE, who is the keeper of the colors, passed the colors to the outgoing commander. He then passed the colors to the 311th ESC commanding general, symbolizing the relinquishment of his command. The CG then delivered the colors to the incoming commander. Finally, the new commander passed the colors back to the command sergeant major, who is charged with protecting it. At the end of the ceremony, the commanding general ordered the new brigade commander to take charge of his brigade.
Headquartered at the March Air Reserve Base, the 304th Sustainment Brigade is one of 35 brigades in the U.S. Army configured to support the Army’s rapidly changing combat and support structure. The brigade’s expeditionary capability allows it to rapidly deploy anywhere in the world.
