SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – More than 100 Soldiers from the 536th Support Maintenance Company reunited with their families here today following a nine-month deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

While in Afghanistan, the unit supported multiple regional commands by conducting quality assurance and control operations, said Lt. Col. James Droppleman, the commander of the 524th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. They enabled retrograde operations, inspected and repaired nearly 10,000 work orders, enabling recovery operations.

“It is a great pleasure to see you all gathered here to welcome our Soldiers home to Hawaii,” said Droppleman. “It was your strength and unwavering support that allowed our Soldiers to focus on their task at hand while downrange.”

Friends and family members flooded the unit’s parking lot, holding homemade welcome home signs and bushels of leis, while screaming as their Soldiers marched toward them. When released, the two crowds crashed into each other in a wave of tears, hugs and kisses.

“It’s so great to be back,” said Sgt. Michael Mahoney, a Soldier with the 536th. “I can’t wait to spend some quality time with my family.

The unit’s higher headquarters, the 524th CSSB, 45th Sustainment Brigade, returned from their nine-month Afghanistan deployment a month prior.

The 536th SMC is part of the 8th TSC, the senior Army logistics command in the Pacific, responsible for logistics and supply for land operations throughout the theater, employing 167 different skill sets, with 35 unique capabilities, to include Military Police, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Army Watercraft, Dive and Engineer operations.
