MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The Central Intelligence Agency, British Royal Marines and 18 other organizations gathered to compete for title of best rifle and pistol marksman at the 2014 Eastern Division Rifle and Pistol Competition aboard Stone Bay Rifle Range, March 17 to 28.
The annual competition serves as a venue for participants to showcase their skill and challenge each other.
The competitors participated in the Division Championship Course of Fire, which includes shooting the M16-A4 service rifle and M9 pistol on the Competition in Arms Program 2013 Rifle and Pistol Course of Fire.
The goal of the program is to enhance combat marksmanship proficiency. The competition serves as a 11- day training period for Marines to refine their marksmanship skills under the more stressful, demanding conditions of competition.
Participants competed in the Individual and Team Rifle Match, Individual and Team Pistol Match for the Royal Marines Bowl, Inter- Corps Cup and Wirgman Trophy. The Marines were also given the opportunity to complete their annual rifle and pistol qualification and earn distinguished shooting badges for their service and dress uniforms.
“We’re invited to shoot against the United States Marines every year,” said Cpl. David Marlow, from the British Royal Marines marksmanship team. “I’ve learned a lot since being here, I’m glad I got the opportunity to come here and participate. I’ve had a great time shooting and learning from the Marines.”
Before competing in the matches, Marines stationed aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune honed their skills during the 2014 Camp Lejeune Intramural Rifle and Pistol Competition.
“Marines don’t always get the opportunity to do things like this, so I’m appreciative,” said Sgt. Javen Roberson, a shooting coach with Weapons Training Battalion. “A select few meet the requirements and get to shoot, so whoever gets the chance should take this event seriously and ask questions to their instructors so they can make themselves and one another better.”
The Marines gathered at the intramural competition to assess their skills and possibly earn a top spot at the division matches.
“The competition serves as a venue for these Marines to display their skill,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Troy Carroll, battalion gunner of Weapons Training Battalion. “Marines who master these fundamentals come out to compete and pass them along to other Marines who participate.”
The individual rifle match winner was Sgt. Steven M. Calvaresi, Marine Corps Shooting Team; individual pistol match winner was Cpl. Stephen E. Newell, shooting coach, Weapons Training Battalion; Team rifle match winner was 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion and the team pistol match winner was Parris Island.
After the intramural competition, the top competitors shot against other elite marksman.
“I did well on the pistol and rifle range, so I’m looking forward to coming back next year,” said Cpl. Keith Earnshaw, a motor vehicle operator with Combat Logistics Regiment 25.
The competitors were tasked with teaching the Marines in their command skills they’ve mastered and learned while participating in the matches by Lt. Gen. James S. Hartsell, commanding general of 4th Marine Division and guest of honor at the award ceremony.
“These Marines have come from all over to showcase their skill and they’ve done an amazing job,” said Hartsell. “While in Fallujah, there were Marines shooting insurgents at 500 yards, and everyone thought it was a sniper team. It was United States Marine marksmanship.”
