CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq – "I'm ready to redeploy," said 1st. Lt. Maureen Wells, an engineer with the 35th Engineer Brigade (Corps), an Army National Guard unit from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
The only problem is, she just arrived in country.
The 1169th Engineer Group (Combat), an Alabama Army National Guard unit from Huntsville, cased their colors during a transition of authority ceremony here, ending a 12-month deployment.
The unit, which was organized and federally recognized in 1926, deployed to Iraq last September, arriving just ahead of the 1st Cavalry Division. Their main missions were to provide engineer support and force protection, as well as perform route clearing missions for the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
The 35th Engineer Brigade (Corps) takes over operations from the 1169th and will provide engineering support for the next 12 to 15 months.
"About 80 percent of our unit has been deployed before," said Wells. "Our experience will help carry us through the deployment."
Brig. Gen. Michael Pace, commander of the 35th Engineer Brigade, said he looks forward to the mission at hand and his unit is ready to accept the responsibility.
"We stand ready to assist in any way we can," he said.
