FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Soldiers of 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment reached out to the Fairbanks community with the annual 5-1 Cavalry Blackhawks Food Drive, collecting more than 4,800 food items and donating them to the Fairbanks community March 3.
“We endeavor to support the Fairbanks community whenever we can,” said 5-1 CAV executive officer Maj. Jason Moncuse. “From working with similar agencies in the past, we’ve learned that the months following Christmas are some of the most vital for food collection. The surge of giving from the holidays has passed and donation centers are often left wanting for goods.”
The drive, which came to a close Feb. 28, was a chance for some friendly competition between the troops. The senior enlisted advisers for each company were asked to disseminate the message and encourage their soldiers to bring in canned goods and other nonperishable food items. Troops continually raised awareness of the event and encouraged one another to donate so they could be the top troop.
In the end, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop repeated their victory from last year by bringing in more than 2,000 items.
“This is a big win for the troop, the squadron and the community,” said HHT 1st Sgt. Philip Harrison. “I’m proud of my soldiers and glad we could help those in need.”
Harrison said reminding his troopers of the importance of giving to the local community and helping those in need motivated them to bring home the win.
“Opportunities like this help soldiers to further embrace their commitment to support their nation and their local community,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Travis Votaw, squadron command sergeant major. “It’s a blessing to see many of our younger soldiers become motivated about helping those in need. My hope is that next year we’ll be able to provide an even greater donation to the Fairbanks community.”
