SUMTER, S.C. - The 823rd Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operations Repair Squadron Engineers assigned to Hurlburt Field, Fla., transferred heavy machinery here, March 17-18 in preparation for reconstruction of Patrol Road.

Over the course of two days, 18 airmen unloaded equipment that was brought to base by several semi-trucks.

“We bring the equipment here to enable the start of the project,” said Staff Sgt. Antoine Davis, 823rd RED HORSE pavement and equipment operator. “By having us come out and do the construction it saves the Air Force money by not having to contract the project out to some company.”

Patrol Road is currently 20 feet wide, which does not meet South Carolina Department of Transportation standard.

“The road will be expanded to 24 feet,” said 2nd Lt. Kyle Brown, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron chief of portfolio optimization.

Construction is set to start in April, repaving from the Shaw Drive intersection to the East gate.

“During construction, sections of Patrol Road will be a one-way lane controlled by the construction crew,” said Brown.

The project is scheduled to be completed mid July.
