NEW BERN, N.C. – New Bern’s Military Alliance hosted a luncheon March 13, 2014 in honor of Gunnery Sgt. Zane J. Poe and his family, honoring them as the Military Family of the Quarter at the New Bern Golf & Country Club.
Poe and his family were recognized for their off-duty volunteer efforts in the community as well as excelling in their current duties.
Poe is currently the metrology calibration chief and mobile facilities coordinator with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. In addition to his day-to-day duties, Poe serves as the command Uniformed Victim Advocate. He provided more than 40 hours of sexual assault prevention and response training to more than 2,000 Marines and Sailors assigned to Cherry Point this quarter. Additionally, Poe has volunteered more than 80 hours with Creekside Elementary School where his three children attend.
Michelle, Poe’s wife, performs more than 96 volunteer hours each quarter with healthcare providers in the local area to help her reach her professional goal as a registered nurse. Also, she is involved in supporting military and civilian families on and off base while helping raise three children.
“If I could, I would volunteer more time with the school just to be with my kids as well as doing all I can to help the students of Creekside succeed,” said Gunnery Sgt. Poe.
Poe hopes his volunteer service resonates with his children so that they can get involved with the community in the future. “As they get older my wife and I hope to provide them examples of giving back to the community,” he said.
Poe learned of the Family of the Quarter honors after reading an email from the City of New Bern asking who would attend the luncheon as his guests. The news was a welcome surprise, according to Poe.
“I was very surprised and humbled,” said Poe. “I honestly believed that once my write-up was submitted, there would be no way that I would be the Marine chosen.”
On their free time, the Poe family enjoys going to the park, fishing, going to the movies and dining out.
“It was truly humbling attending the luncheon and I could never be grateful enough for the support the NBMA showed me and my family,” said Poe.
