    III Marine Expeditionary Force

DAEGU, Republic of Korea – Republic of Korea and U.S. Marines came together to test a secure communications controller, also known as SCC, at Daegu Air Base in the Republic of Korea March 13 as part of Marine Expeditionary Force Exercise 2014.

An SCC synchronizes communication equipment used by the two nations without the need for complex coding or encryption.

“The SCC essentially allows two different radios from two different countries to communicate transmissions without having to patch messages that are encrypted,” said U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Chris Fincham, a communications officer with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III MEF. “The SCC improves our ability to communicate bilaterally with our ROK counterparts.”

The ROK and U.S. Marines participated in a classroom and practical application training event to hone their skills communicating with the SCC. They tested the equipment by executing radio checks with handheld receivers after connecting both the ROK and U.S. Marine Corps communications systems into the SCC module.

“This device will allow Marines from both of our countries to communicate more easily,” said ROK Marine Cpl. Jong Hyuk Choi.

The SCC is a new type of communications equipment being fielded by the U.S. and ROK Marines to facilitate rapid communication across multiple mediums.

“The SCC even allows tactical radios the capability to communicate with cell phones,” said U.S. Marine Sgt. Melissa Martinez, a radio supervisor and equipment non-commissioned officer with the battalion. “(This makes) it a force multiplier during humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions with coalition forces. (Marine Corps Systems Command) wanted us to test the SCC in a coalition environment and give feedback.”

The SCC was loaned out for field testing by MARCORSYSCOM.
MEFEX 2014 takes place throughout southern and southeastern South Korea from March 10 to mid-April, 2014. MEFEX 2014 exercises the interoperability and combined capability of ROK and U.S. Navy and Marine Corps forces.
