YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea - Eighth Army welcomed its new deputy commanding general for operations during Exercise Key Resolve 2014.
Eighth Army deputy commanding general for operations Brig. Gen. Brian J. McKiernan arrived in South Korea during the annual command post exercise.
The Providence, R.I., native reported to Eighth Army following an assignment as the deputy commanding general of support for the Fort Bragg, N.C.-based 82nd Airborne Division, the centerpiece of the U.S. Army contribution to the nation's Global Response Force.
McKiernan served in South Korea twice before. From 2007 to 2009, he commanded the 210th Fires Brigade. The Vanderbilt University graduate also served in the 6-37th Field Artillery Battalion and 2nd Infantry Division Artillery. Following that, McKiernan was the theater operations officer for the Republic of Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command.
A field artillery officer and combat veteran, McKiernan participated in Operation Desert Storm and deployed to Iraq twice for Operation Iraq Freedom.
The former 82nd Airborne Division deputy commander said he jumped at the opportunity to return to South Korea.
"I welcome the opportunity to serve with our service members, civilians, family members and allies here in the Republic of Korea," said McKiernan. "Our alliance is the strongest alliance in the world and it is an honor to serve in it and defend liberty on Freedom's Frontier."
