Mobilization and Deployment, DPTMS Fort Bliss

FORT BLISS, Texas - The Directorate of Mobilization and Deployment took first place in the final evening of the spring 2014 Garrison bowling league at the Fort Bliss Bowling Center, Feb. 26. The DNTMADRS (pronounced “Don’t Matters”) finished the season in first place and The Lucky Strikes, a mix of Garrison employees, took second.

The DNTMADRS team players were Sgt. 1st Class Randall Osborne, logistics noncommissioned officer in charge; Lt. Col. Douglas Porter, Special Projects Officer, and Lt. Col. David Kukkola, deputy commanding officer.

“It’s fun. We played against teams from all over Garrison,” said Porter who also served as the DNTMADRS team captain. “My parents were bowlers and my brother and I grew up in a nursery in a bowling alley.”

The spring 2014 Garrison league was the first in a series of planned leagues. Twelve teams of three players played the four-week league. Col. Brant V. Dayley, Fort Bliss Garrison commander, started the bowling series to allow bowlers to commit to a shorter time-frame league.

Dayley, an avid bowler, has been playing since he was seven. Dayley would score games while his father and grandfather bowled. He played in high school and college, sometimes in up to four leagues simultaneously.

“This is a place where we can all get together and have fun,” said Dayley.

Tim Anklam, the civilian lead defense travel administrator for Fort Bliss with the defense military pay office, has also bowled since childhood. He played on the Rowdy Rollers team, one of three teams comprised of pay office employees.

“I can honestly say I think everybody has had a good time bowling,” said Anklam. “You get to meet different people from different organizations and just have a good time.”

For Denise Carothers, a civilian employee with Army Community Service at the Family Resilience Center, this was her first league experience. She bowled with the Treacherous 3. The more experienced bowlers gave her pointers which helped her to improve her bowling average during the league.

“I’m not that great of a bowler so I didn’t come out to win. Just to come out to have fun. I did come out to meet new people, which I have done,” said Carothers.

Despite her lack of experience, on the final evening of play Carothers bowled her first ‘turkey’, which is a bowling term for four strikes in a row.

“I never bowl this good,” claimed Carothers.

Anthony Williams, a civilian training instructor, works with Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, is a member of the Lucky Strikes team. This was his first experience with the garrison league. Williams started bowling at age 10 in Detroit, Mich. His skill was evident as he bowled 10 strikes in his second game of the night.

“I have a passion for bowling,” Williams said. “I think it’s really fun for the Garrison employees to come out and interact with each other and I think everyone here is going to come out for the next one and then the next one after that.”

When the games were over, the league had a brief award ceremony.

“I’m really thrilled that Sgt. [Terrance] Sutton actually was the guy who pulled this off,” Dayley said, as he presented Sutton with a coin, the last in the traditional Garrison format which has an eagle on the back.

“I’m kind of sad that it’s over. I’ve met some really great people,” said Carothers.

“I really had a lot of fun and look forward to the next one they have,” agreed Williams.
