MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Keely Siebenthal, a Petty Officer 2nd Class corpsman with Marine Special Operations Command, was awarded the Service Member of the Year award by the Military Affairs Committee, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce at the Paradise Point Officers’ Club aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Feb. 11.
The Service Member of the Year award is given annually to a service member who has gone above and beyond their regular duties and upholds the highest standards of the military, both on and off-duty, said Kevin McConnell, the vice chairman of the Military Affairs Committee.
“I’m really appreciative and humbled to be able to receive this award,” said Siebenthal. “I think it’s really interesting the Military Affairs Committee of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce gets this involved in the community and I’m very grateful for it.”
Siebenthal was born on Camp Pendleton, Calif., July 6, 1984, while her father was an active-duty Marine. She graduated high school in Indiana where she excelled in both academics and athletics. After high school, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in interior design and worked as a substitute teacher.
In May of 2008, Siebenthal reported to Navy boot camp at Great Lakes, Ill. She then graduated from the Hospital Corpsman School in November. After that she reported to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point as a corpsman and was selected Sailor of the Quarter three times.
In July 2010, Siebenthal reported to Marine Special Operations Command where she served as the command career counselor alongside her corpsman duties. She was selected as the MARSOC Junior Sailor of the Year for 2013.
While in Afghanistan, Siebenthal treated approximately 537 local nationals, managed a medical supply budget of $200,000, participated in more than 80 combat patrols, and initiated and managed the first Women’s Clinic in the area.
Siebenthal will remain with MARSOC until 2015. She then plans to get another degree and become a Medical Service Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy.
“Siebenthal not only rose to the top, but she pulls the people around her up as well and makes whatever organization she is with a better organization,” said Lt. Anthony Skrypek, her officer in charge at MARSOC. “Siebenthal is a testament to what Marines and sailors can do for each other.”
