MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Valentine’s Day is a time for romance. People give cards, letters, flowers and gifts to their spouses, children, family members and friends to show love and appreciation.

Cpl. Chorelle Ramirez, an aircraft electrical systems technician with Marine Attack Training Squadron 203, celebrated Valentine’s Day Feb. 14 by visiting local senior citizens, showing them care and love during a time when it’s needed the most.

Ramirez spent time dancing, talking and giving to seniors during her visit to the Riverpoint Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the UniHealth Post-acute Care Trent Nursing Home, both in New Bern.

“There are many people out there who are hurting and who need help, and if giving my time can make even the smallest of difference then I am going to do it,” said Ramirez. “Give someone your time and it will mean more than words can ever say or gifts that you could ever buy.”

Ramirez has volunteered since high school, dedicating her time to people who needed it in some way or another. After joining the Marine Corps in 2009, she began volunteering while off duty.

“Volunteering is important to me because I believe that there is more to life than just what I can do for myself,” said Ramirez. “This is my opportunity to give a little something of myself; to give my time to those exact people and let them know that there is home for them, that they still matter and that others do care about them.”

Ramirez talked with some of the residents, recalling Valentine's Days past.

“It was just awesome,” said Ramirez. “Some say that in giving to others you get something in return. I’m here to say that it's true and that’s better than gold if you will just recognize it.”

This is a part of life in and out of uniform for Ramirez who has a habit of looking for ways to contribute wherever she goes.

“Relationships are hard to come by and hard to have while serving in the military, but being a Marine is a part of who I am,” said Ramirez. “The job that I do in the Marine Corps can be demanding at times, but those that I love and care about, and those who love and care about me, understand this.”

Ramirez, a Single Marine Program volunteer, looks for volunteer opportunities routinely.

“[The Single Marine Program] makes it easier to know what is out there. They make it really convenient for volunteers to find opportunities to give back to the community and its people,” said Ramirez.
