MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. -Sgt. Maj. Marion L. Hammerschmidt Jr., relinquished the role of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 269 sergeant major during a relief and appointment ceremony at the squadron’s hangar aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, Feb. 13.
Hammerschmidt took the helm as the senior enlisted advisor in 2012. During his time, he has empowered staff noncommissioned officers (SNCOs) and mentored the NCOs, said Lt. Col. Alex K. Fulford, HMLA-269 commanding officer.
“He has taken care of the Marines and ensured that the squadron succeeded,” Fulford continued. “Thirty-four Marines (in our squadron) have been meritoriously promoted since he came here. Ten Marines have gotten either Marine of the Quarter or NCO of the Quarter.”
While the commanding officer and many of his fellow leaders attribute the decline in disciplinary issues and the surge of positive behavior in the squadron to Hammerschmidt’s leadership, the sergeant major accredits the Marines under him.
“I have a medal stuck to my chest for your accomplishments,” he told the Marines, alluding to the Meritorious Service Medal the commanding officer pinned on him moments before.
The Marines of the squadron demonstrated their professionalism time and again, said Hammerschmidt, to include executing the relief and appointment ceremony. The air station closed to non-essential personnel during the normal work day on Feb. 11, and remained closed all day on Feb. 12, but the Marines came in at 6 a.m. the day of the ceremony to practice and prepare.
“You hard work and dedication is evident,” said in-coming Sgt. Maj. Lynnette C. Marr-Gaye. “I am dedicated to the mission and taking care of the Marines.”
Marr-Gaye came to MCAS New River from Ordnance Maintenance Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. Marr-Gaye joined the Marine Corps in 1994 as a motor transportation specialist, lateral moving to become an aviation supply specialist as a corporal.
