KEY WEST, Fla. - Naval Air Station Key West’s Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions kicked off its Biggest Loser-themed contest, Feb. 3, at the Boca Chica Field Gym.

CSADD Public Affairs Officer Logistics Specialist Seaman Brittney Joseph and CSADD Assistant Lead Advocate Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 2nd Class Michelle Ocon-Hernandez coordinated the contest as a proactive approach for meeting one of their focus topics of this year; nutrition.

“We have to find ways to get information out that sailors would actually want to be involved in,” said Ocon-Hernandez. “We thought that bringing up a challenge would not only motivate yourself as an individual but also you can motivate others.”

Participants will compete as individuals or in groups of three to four and must comply with the Navy regulations, OPNAVINST 6110.1J.

Contest categories include: individual body fat loss, individual weight loss, group average body fat loss, and group average weight loss.

“It’s different. It’s more exciting. It gets people more into it. The PRT is coming up and they’re ramping up for what’s about to happen,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Kevin Tucker, a command fitness leader assisting with contest weigh-ins.

Individual winners will receive a 72-hour liberty pass for first place, 48-hours for second place, and 24 hours for third place. Special 48-hour liberty passes and trophies will be rewarded to only the first place winners in the group categories.

“I think it’s a great idea and hopefully everybody will follow through and use all their resources like myself, a fitness specialist over at the gym,” said Sylvia Williams, of Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

The contest will run for six weeks and winners will be announced March 21.
