NORFOLK, Va. — Sailors in USS Bataan’s (LHD 5) Supply Department set a new standard for amphibious ships with the grand opening of their newly renovated “Ship’s Store” Jan 21.

Attendance at the ceremony included Chief Executive Officer, Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) retired Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi, Rear Adm. John P. Polowczyk, director, Fleet Ordnance and Supply, U.S. Fleet Forces Command and members of the Navy Exchange Team.

Though the renovation didn’t make significant changes to the layout or size of the store, the store received a new streamline layout, a visual aesthetic change consisting of murals and counter displays with the help of the NEXCOM Visualizing Merchandising team. The store also expanded inventory, allowing for more options and ultimately improving the shopping experience.

“This wasn’t a 100 percent renovation. Following along with the aircraft carriers, we kept a little of the Bataan charm. The NEXCOM team did a truly awesome job,” said Bataan's Supply Officer, Cmdr. Pamela S. Theorgood. “When you come in here now it’s a different look and a different feel, we’ve changed the whole shopping experience for our sailors and Marines. It will make a huge difference on deployment and beyond.”

The renovation lasted approximately three weeks and involved changing shelving quantity, providing ample merchandise space for the extended inventory while on deployment. These changes will improve the overall shopping experience, providing the sailors and Marines with more options, along with an increased revenue for the ship’s Morale Welfare and Recreation Program.

“These things don’t happen without a lot of hard work, so a thank you to ship’s company, the Supply S-3 team that truly worked hard to make this happen,” said Bianchi “The intent is not to take away the identity of the ships store, but what we hoped to bring to the table is visual elements and the merchandising elements.”
