MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Maj. Gen. Nick Tooliatos, commander, 63rd Regional Support Command, Army Reserve along with other senior members of the Army, Army Reserve, California National Guard, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and Google attended Google’s Corporate Statement of Support to ESGR Signing Ceremony at the Google campus in Mountain View, Calif., Jan. 21, 2014.

The ceremony was led by Carrie Laureno, founder and president of the Google Veterans Network at Google since October 2007. Though Laureno never served in the Military, she shared a heart-felt story of losing someone close to her who was killed in Afghanistan while serving in the military.

Among the speakers were retired Maj. Gen. Paul Mock, the ESGR national chairman; Maj. Gen. Nick Tooliatos, commander, 63rd RSC; Lt. Col. William Houston, who works for Google as well as being in the Army Reserve; Col. John Lathrop, representing the California National Guard; and Laszlo Bock, senior vice president of People Operations, Google Inc.

After exchanging organizational coins with Laureno, Mock kicked off the speakers followed by Tooliatos, who emphasized the importance of companies like Google giving service members civilian skills that they can then bring back to their military service and help to increase mission readiness.

Houston recalled his early days at Google and how supportive his colleagues were about his military service, even when he had to attend annual training only two weeks after starting his position.

In true Google fashion, Bock Quoted the Spider Man movies saying, “With great power comes great responsibility,” speaking about the social influence Google has and the obligation to use that influence in responsible ways, such as showing their support for service members.

Bock, who was born in Romania, defected with his family when he was a toddler and finally came to the United States after spending two years in a refugee camp. Like Laureno, Bock has never served in the military, but he shares with her a respect for service members and the sacrifices they make.
