MACON, Ga. - Georgia Guardsmen trained Georgia Guardsmen for combat operations in March 2013 in Athens. Georgia’s 78th Homeland Response Force’s Medical Company and Georgia’s 78th Aviation Troop Command’s Aero Medical Evacuation Company put on training for the medics of Georgia’s 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team to help prepare them for a possible deployment in early 2014.

“About 50 medics received advanced medical training comprised of dental health, mental health, intravenous fusion training, ground evacuation training, aero-medical evacuation request training, and helicopter load and unload training among other training events,” said Sgt. 1st Class Bryan Johnson, noncommissioned officer in charge.

Each unit brought in equipment to ensure the 48th’s medics trained on the same equipment they will see in theatre to include a HH-60M Black Hawk helicopter.

“My favorite training event today will be the Aero Medical Evacuation load and unload training,” said Spc. Milton Woods. “This will be my first time working with a helicopter as the blades are turning and I should be able to ride as a patient as well during one of the patient lifts.”

The training is not just one sided either. Crews on the Black Hawk get valuable training working around infantry Guardsmen too. First Lt. Michael Echevarria recently returned from flight school and finished his progression as a pilot with Det. 1, Charlie Company, 1-111th General Support Aviation Battalion. This was his first training event where he landed in support of a unit and conducted aero medical evacuation training.

“It is great to have all of the specialties in one state and pull them together for training events like these,” said Lt. Col. Randal Simmons, 48th IBCT Commander. “I love seeing Georgia Guardsmen training Georgia Guardsmen.”
