SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support provided excess uniforms to the 25th Infantry Division’s Jungle Operations Training Center in Hawaii, saving that organization money and reducing DLA’s inventory.

In line with the DLA director’s “Big Ideas” initiatives to reduce inventory and improve customer service, DLA Troop Support Clothing and Textiles collaborated with DLA Troop Support Pacific, DLA Distribution Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and DLA Disposition Services to begin delivering the items this month.

About 17,000 woodland camouflage battle dress uniforms, valued at nearly $1.2 million, will include coats, trousers and caps. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed by March, C&T Plans and Integration Chief Dave Farrell said.

Farrell described the transaction as an all-around positive effort between DLA’s various field activities, the Army Program Executive Office Soldier, and the division.

“This was a good joint effort that allowed us to utilize uniforms that would’ve otherwise been disposed of, and the [25th Infantry Division] wouldn’t have been able to run their school without the uniforms,” Farrell said.

The collaboration of the DLA organizations demonstrate solid customer service and fiscal responsibility, Steve DiRico, DLA Troop Support Pacific deputy chief of the Hawaii area office, said.

“This was a unique opportunity for the DLA Troop Support clothing and textiles supply chain to support our Army customer’s training mission when they were faced with budget constraints,” DiRico said. “Cleaning out the closet and disposing of these battle dress uniform items for this purpose is what stewardship is all about.”

Following this coordination effort, Walter Mead, a forward logistics specialist in the Hawaii area office, said he was proud to be on the DLA team.

“There was a considerable amount of collaboration within DLA to accommodate the customer’s needs and a lot of moving parts to this project,” Mead said. “Special thanks to all who worked this project.”

The Jungle Operations Training Center is part of the 25th Infantry Division Lightning Academy, a training hub designed to develop the critical thinking skills of its inner-agency students in the Pacific environment, according to a Department of Defense release.
