U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Southwestern Division

DALLAS—Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Kula, the commander of the Southwestern Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will retire from the U.S. Army after 32 years of service, effective April 11. The Southwestern Division will change command on April 4, and will include Kula’s retirement ceremony.

"I am so very appreciative of the many opportunities I have been given to serve our nation," Kula said, "and I’m always proud of the men and women I have been fortunate to serve with and to lead. I have enjoyed my last three years with Southwestern Division supporting a seven state region and providing value to the public and our many partners. It's been a tremendous last assignment!

“I’m also very grateful for all the dedication and sacrifices that my family has shown in support of my Army career. The Army is a family affair, and mine have always been there for me.

“Though it’s always hard to end one chapter of a career, I have the best of all memories of the Army, and I look forward to continuing to serve our region and our nation in other capacities.”

The North Chicago, Ill., native was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers and awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1982. He holds a Master's Degree in Military Arts and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies, Command and General Staff College.

His previous military assignments have included assignments in Germany, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C., the Pentagon, and deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Col. Richard J. Muraski, currently the SWD deputy commander, will assume command of the Division until a permanent commander is named.

Kula lives in Rockwall and plans to remain in the area.
