SEOUL - The Eighth Army deputy commanding general for operations thanked the residents of the South Korean capital's Gangnam District for their support of Eighth Army.

Eighth Army Deputy commanding general for operations Maj. Gen. Walter M. Golden spoke Jan. 9 at the Gangnam New Year's reception at COEX, the site of the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit and the 2010 G-20 Summit.

"Gangnam is the role model of Korea's amazing development and Gangnam truly epitomizes the Miracle on the Han," said Golden. "This world-class venue you see before you is just one of many premier examples of Gangnam's success."

Ushering in the Year of the Horse prior to the Lunar New Year, the reception was hosted by Gangnam District Mayor Dr. Shin Yeon-hee and attended by residents of the famous district on the south side of the Han River.

"This year, we are looking forward to the many great things we will accomplish together, including cultural exchanges between Eighth Army and the Gangnam District," said Golden, a Black Hawk pilot from Salida, Colo.

The Gangnam District signed a memorandum of understanding with Eighth Army in 2004 to strengthen the bond between its residents and U.S. soldiers serving in South Korea. In the last 10 years, the Gangnam District has hosted and organized more than 150 events for American troops.

"This new year brings new opportunities," said Golden, "and we look forward to working closely together with the Gangnam District in 2014 to make the world's strongest alliance even stronger."

"The ROK-U.S. alliance, Gangnam District and Eighth Army are strong and getting stronger," said Golden.
