SAN DIEGO - United States Marine Corps Recruiting Station San Diego Marines partnered with ASA Entertainment during the 2013 High School Tour for their tobacco free and anti-bullying campaign Dec. 2 through 13.

ASA Entertainment is a traveling action sports demonstration team that visits high schools across the nation to promote tobacco-free lifestyles among students age 14 to 18. These sports include skateboarding and various styles of BMX bicycle riding. This year’s tour was 13 weeks of performances along the Pacific Coast culminating in a final two weeks in San Diego.

During those final days the sports team and the Marines of Recruiting Sub Stations National City, El Cajon and Clairemont visited 10 high schools and interacted with more than one thousand students.

“We really pumped up this event over the last few weeks with announcements,” said Tanya Bulette, a counselor with Vahalla High School. “We have never hosted an event like this, but it is really great. It keeps kids interested and has a good message. We really appreciate the Marines [participation] too. We made sure to talk about them coming out to be part of this event. Our teachers were even encouraging students to give the pull-up bar a try.”

Marines presented a pull-up and flexed-arm hang challenge at each school where students could win prizes and learn about the opportunities the Marine Corps had to offer after graduation. Prizes included posters, stickers, water bottles, arm bands, shirts and for a few physically fit, a Marine Corps duffel bag.

Males attempted to complete 20 pull-ups while females attempted either a set of eight pull-ups or a 70 second flexed-arm hang.

“I try the hang and pull-up challenge every time [the recruiters] come to our school or whenever I see their booth,” said Ally Hoffman, a student at Vahalla High School. “I have tried the hang but I like the pull-ups better. I tried to win the t-shirt but was a few (pull-ups) short.”

Events and partnerships like this also provide teachers, coaches and school faculty with a chance to learn the benefits of the Marine Corps.

“Some of the Sweetwater High School teachers who were in the middle of teaching class brought their students outside to check out the [ASA team] and ended up encouraging the children to get on the bar at our booth,” said Sgt. Aire Palms, a recruiter with RSS National City. “We had teachers coming up and asking questions about the Marine Corps. A few of those teachers even got on the bar and challenged their students to give it a try.”

These kind of events are beneficial for the recruiters because they give them a lot of face time with both teachers and a large number of students at once.

The educators get a chance to see what the Marine Corps is about while the recruiters make their presence known to the students. This event is also a great lead generator, explained Gunnery Sgt. Mark Kamenszky, the staff noncommissioned officer in charge of RSS National City.

“I would definitely recommend doing this event next year,” said Kamenszky.
