QUANTICO, Va. - A canvas depicting two soldiers, one U.S. and one British, with their native flags draped over their shoulders, was displayed in the Marine Corps Marathon conference room on Dec. 13, 2013.
The soldiers, although only a print, symbolized something that was just as real as the commanding officer it was presented to.
“We at the Allied Forces Foundation wanted to give a small token of our appreciation for hosting us and our wounded warriors who come every year to do the Marine Corps Marathon,” said Stuart Taylor, director of the Allied Forces Foundation. “We wanted to show our appreciation, and the painting, demonstrates that with the image of the U.K. and U.S. warriors in combat, fighting together.”
The AFF brings wounded warriors from the United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia and Canada every year to challenge themselves with the largest Marine Corps-sponsored race.
“I think [the print] is an expression of the spirit of cooperation and spirit of side-by-side partnership the British and the Americans have had for years,” said Col. David Maxwell, commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Quantico. “There’s such a common bond between the two nations, and this is a great expression of that.”
Taylor also noted the first-class way in which the guests have been treated.
“[Primarily this] is a ‘thank you’ to the Marine Corps for running a wonderful event, the Marine Corps Marathon, and secondly for hosting us with such dignity,” said Taylor. “We want to keep the longevity of this relationship.”
Maybe Maxwell summed up the command’s feeling on the presentation the best way.
“The print is pretty inspiring,” said Maxwell.
