CHERRY POINT, N.C. - More than 1,200 local community members watched the New Bern, N.C. Ballet Company perform its rendition of “The Nutcracker” at the Two Rivers Theater and Event Center Dec. 6.

Performing for their third consecutive year at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, the cast dedicated more than four months of prolonged practices to master the intricate choreography to ensure the production was a success, said Laura Karmi, the artistic director of the New Bern Ballet Company.

“I thought it was an outstanding performance that left me wanting to learn more about the New Bern Ballet Company,” said Master Sgt. Fred Brock, the personal and professional development representative with Marine and Family Programs. “I brought my daughters to help them learn about the art of dancing.”

The Nutcracker is based on the story, “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman.

The story tells of a little girl who receives her beloved nutcracker during the Christmas holiday. The nutcracker then battles his arch enemy the Mouse King. After a daring sword fight, the girl and her prince are visited and entertained by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her legion of interesting characters.

The company presented its 9th performance of the ballet and is looking forward to years more. The performers show their love for the art form and work hard to ensure the performance is enjoyable for the participants and audience members.

“I’m used to dancing in front of crowds but dancing in front of military members is different,” said Goodman. “They have paused from protecting our country, and it’s amazing to know that they are here to see us.”

The performance was open to all authorized air station patrons and their families. As the show came to an end, the crowd cheered and applauded the company for a job well done.

“This time of year is always busy, and it is truly significant that the New Bern Ballet company takes the time to bring their show to us,” said Staff Sgt. Terri Kopetzki, a small ensemble leader with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band. “‘The Nutcracker’ is not only a great way to celebrate the holiday season, but it is also a great way to share or introduce the arts with our children.”
