NEW RIVER, N.C. - Families and friends gathered at the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 167 hangar aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River to welcome home their Marines and Sailors from a deployment to Afghanistan, Nov. 21.

Approximately 250 Marines and Sailors from HMLA-167 were deployed for more than six months in Afghanistan providing offensive air support, close-air support, medical evacuations, and providing support to troops on the ground, said Maj. Matt Humphrey, HMLA-167 executive officer.

According to Maj. Douglas T. Campbell, HMLA-167 assistant operations officer, the squadron conducted more than 3,700 flight-hours and 3,200 sorties with the AH-1W Super Cobras and more than 3,000 flight-hours and 2,400 sorties with the UH-1Y Hueys.

While the majority of HMLA-167 Marines were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), the squadron had a small detachment of its Marines deployed to Okinawa, Japan, supporting other operations.

“(More than) 60 of our Marines were attached to a reserve Heavy Helicopter Squadron in Okinawa at the same time (as our deployment in Afghanistan),” said Humphrey.

While Humphrey was deployed to Afghanistan, he said the deployment was successful, although at times the Marines ran into obstacles and shortcomings; they were able to pull through and achieve mission accomplishment while supporting other units.

“I would say that the most notable achievement we had was the units that we supported were happy (with the support our squadron provided), and that to me is the notable achievement,” said Humphrey.

“I feel overall it was a successful deployment, and I feel privileged to have worked with and watched these Marines do what they do.”
