BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan- Marine Gen. James T. Conway, commandant of the Marine Corps, began a visit to Afghanistan on Monday.
With the intent of speaking to all of the Marines in eastern Afghanistan, Conway's two-day trip took him to forward operating bases and fire bases throughout Regional Command-East.
Marine Lt. Gen. Richard F. Natonski, deputy commandant for plans, policies, and operations, and Marine Brig. Gen. Michael Regner, legislative assistant to the commandant of the Marine Corps, accompanied Conway on his trip.
The main topic the commandant brought to the Marines was the approval and gratitude of the American public.
"Your countrymen know you're here, and they appreciate what you're doing," said Conway. "Our forces here, along with the Afghan forces, are doing a good job."
The commandant gave Marines information about their success in Iraq and Afghanistan, updates on equipment and personnel, and took part in several promotion and re-enlistment ceremonies during his visit in Afghanistan.
