FORT BELVOIR, Va. - McNamara Headquarters Complex employees turned nearby walking trails into a frightful scene of goblins and ghouls Oct. 30 during the first Zombie 5K Run/Walk.

More than 220 people participated in the 5K, and about 30 percent wore costumes ranging from spooky to funny, said Greg Cummings, program manager for the HQC Morale, Welfare and Recreation program, which sponsored the event.

The top male and female runners were James Snoddy from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and Kathleen Drohan from the Defense Logistics Agency. Snoddy finished in 20 minutes and 31 seconds. Drohan finished in 25 minutes and 11 seconds.

Navy Capt. Randy Baker from DLA Logistics Operations used the event to meet his military physical fitness requirement for the day.

“I usually hit the gym in the early afternoon, when the lunch crowd is gone, but since today is my cardio day, I figured I’d do this instead,” he said.

Baker set out with a goal to complete the run in less than 30 minutes.

“I finished in 29:55. Not my best, but not my worst. I am pleased that I got some good cardio in while running with some shipmates. It was fun, and the snacks afterward were better,” he said about post-race refreshments made available for all participants in the cafeteria.

Jeanne Rector from DLA Energy walked the course in a witch costume as part of her commitment to living a healthy lifestyle. Rector has lost about 35 pounds by participating in the Healthy Base Initiative, which DLA kicked off this summer to encourage more health-driven behavior in the workplace.

“HBI inspired me to learn how to eat healthy and to work out three days a week. It feels great. My blood pressure has gone down, and it’s improved other areas of my life,” she said.

Events such as these give competitive participants a chance to outrun fellow employees, and gives others a chance to enjoy the outdoors, Cummings added.

More coverage from the event is available at DLA’s social media sites: http://ow.ly/qkBIV.
