JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The county’s freshest foods met with live music, hayrides, reptile exhibits and carnival games at the Onslow County Farmers’ Market annual Fall Festival, Nov. 2.

The festival was held in conjunction with the 6th annual Camellia Flower Show and hosted by the Onslow County Master Gardener Volunteers at the Onslow County Multipurpose Complex in Jacksonville.

Kay Baldwin, a festival patron and military spouse, visits the farmers market weekly to buy fresh produce for her family.

“Meeting people who are growing our food is new for us,” said Baldwin. “The food tastes better than what we can buy at a store. The kids always find a new fruit or vegetable that they want to try.”

Baldwin said the farmers market is not only a way to buy fresh food but it is also an opportunity to learn about the local community.

“Being a military family, we move all around,” said Badlwin. “We like to see the differences in cultures, whether it’s in the coasts, in the cities or the country.”

Members of the local community, military members in particular, come from many different places, said Katherine Benoit, a co-manager of the farmers market. Benoit said she feels it’s important to let them know they belong.

“The farmers market encourages unity in our community, when we come together like this we begin to understand and want to help each other. The farmers market brings a sense of family.”

The fall festival usually marks the close of the farmers market for the year. However, this year it marks the beginning of a six-week extension. The extended holiday market is set to feature crafters and other vendors.

The 6th annual Camellia Flower Show also presented a holiday treat to guests. The many exhibited camellias bloom throughout the fall and winter, making the plant a good holiday present.

Camellias of many varieties were showcased by their gardeners and contended in many competition categories.

“Coastal areas are ideal for camellias,” said Jim Van Gorder, the show’s chairman. The versatile plants can be grown as hedges, shrubs or trees, he added.

The flower show also featured seminars and camellia sales.
The farmers market is scheduled to continue every Saturday morning until Dec. 14 at 4024 Richlands Highway, Jacksonville N.C., from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
