FORT BLISS, Texas – Lay-ups, slam dunks and free-throws are some of the tricks that led to shiny treats for three teams that participated in a weekend basketball tournament.

The Fort Bliss Morale Welfare and Recreation hosted the 24th annual Halloween Classic Basketball Tournament Oct. 25-27 at Logan Heights Physical Fitness Center, here.

“When it first kicked off, it was about post level and semi-pro teams but when the Gulf War started, it changed from post level basketball to an open tournament; letting unit teams get in,” said Nate LaCour, Independent League Intramural sports coordinator.

Some of the teams that participated in the tournament include: the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, 202nd Military Police Company, several Fort Bliss teams, and the out-of-town guests, Fort Carson, Colo., Post Basketball Team.

El Paso’s own A-team, led by coach Rodney Lewis, won the tournament by defeating the Fort Bliss post team 102-95 in the championship game.

“This was our 9th year winning in a row, we won the first two tournaments when I was a player,” said Lewis. “We love coming back because it’s a good atmosphere for us here.”

Fort Bliss’ own post team, led by head coach, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Paul Riley, finished in second place after falling in the championship game to the A-team.

“I think we did good, I think we represented the installation very well, we just fell short at the end,” said Riley. “It’s a tradition for us to play in the Halloween tournament here; it’s something we take pride in.”

The Fort Carson team placed 3rd in the tournament after falling to the Fort Bliss post team 79-56 in the semi-final game and posted a 5-2 record.

“We wanted to come out, compete, and to support the MWR down here as well because at the end of the day, it’s all about the soldiers,” said Master Sgt. Angel Acevedo, Fort Carson’s head coach.

“Everybody loves to come to the tournaments here because we give awards,” said LaCour. “If I can’t get the awards from the installation, then I go out and get somebody to sponsor the tournament. I’ve always been there for the soldiers.”
