COLUMBIA, Mo. – Maj. Gen. Stephen L. Danner, adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard, swore in 18 soldiers during an oath of enlistment ceremony at the University of Missouri football game here Saturday.

The ceremony was part of the ongoing partnership between the Missouri National Guard and the university.

“I think this is a great venue here at the university to bring these new recruits on board,” said Danner. “The new recruits coming on board are enthusiastic.”

Many of the new soldiers were excited to be at the football game. One of the highlights for the soldiers was having the highest-ranking officer in the Missouri National Guard administer the oath of enlistment.

“It is a really big honor because you get to stand out in front of so many people,” said Pvt. Dalton Hulme, one of the youngest recruits. "Everybody is watching it on TV, God is looking down on you, and you are just, like ‘wow this is a good moment.’”

The new soldiers are part of the Recruit Sustainment Program for the 27th Recruiting and Retention Battalion.

"It is a tremendous honor for the young men and women that get to partake in this situation," said Sgt. 1st Class Justin Luetjen, the RSP coordinator. “It was an honor for me to be a part of the event.”

The RSP teaches basic Army skills and values to young enlistees prior to advancing to Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. It creates a strong foundation of training that allows recruits the ability to achieve success while dramatically decreasing the attrition rate.
