YOKOSUKA, Japan - The Fleet and Family Service Center (FFSC) on board Fleet Activities, Yokosuka recently began teaching a class to 3rd through 5th graders about the importance of saving money.

The class is called “How to Count Money” and is taught on Wednesdays or Thursdays after school on a bi-weekly basis at the base’s Youth Center.

“It’s important so kids can learn how to save money,” said Chatavia Malker, a program assistant at the Youth Center. “If they spend money, they need to know if they’re getting the right amount of change back.”

The class is taught by Vonnita Murray, a Work and Family Life Consultant at the FFSC.

“Money management is important at this age because these are skills that they are learning and developing now that will actually carry them through life,” Murray said.

Murray also said that some of the youths they’ve worked with in the past didn’t have this kind of money education, so that by teaching them at a younger age they can hope to prevent money problems for young people in their future.

The class also teaches the children other skills such as communications skills and how to work together to solve problems.

“I think they like the interaction, being engaged, and the challenge,” said Murray. “They’re also gaining a lot of skills that they don’t even realize but they’re so engaged with the fun that’s behind it. I think that they really enjoy what they’re doing.”

Murray said that for now the class teaches money in dollars, but plans to introduce other currencies in the future.

“We want to teach them the value of money as it pertains to foreign currency,” Murray said. “Because we’re in Japan, the understanding of the yen is just as important as understanding the dollar.”

Murray said it’s important for parents to teach their children the importance and value of money while their young, so that they don’t struggle with their finances when they become young adults.
