FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. - With more than 26,000 runners completing the race, the 29th Annual Army Ten-Miler may not seem very competitive…unless your higher command team is milliseconds away from beating you to the finish line.

“I saw a couple of the runners on the First Division team throughout the race,” said Lt. Col. Sam Volkman, commander of the 94th Engineer Battalion and part of the “Dauntless” 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. “I was hoping they would run well, but I'm competitive so I also wanted to beat them.”

Volkman completed the run with a finishing time of 57:07.

Although the 1st Infantry Division team’s fastest runner, 1st Lt. Chris Odekirk of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, finished with the same time, he earned 110th place while Volkman placed 109th overall.

Volkman was one of three Dauntless Soldiers selected to represent Fort Leonard Wood and the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence during the Army Ten-Miler Oct. 20. The team took fourth place in the “Active Duty Open: Mixed” category with a combined time of 4:02:19.

One hundred seconds after the combined time of the division’s team.

“There was no denying that our times were close,” said Staff Sgt. Roderick Reeves, 4th MEB communications security manager, whose finishing time was 59:00. “We were fast on the heels of division, but just didn’t beat them this time around.”

This year’s run was Reeves’ second, consecutive Army Ten-Miler. He has run more than 500 races, eight of which were marathons, and he said that he’s not done yet.

“I’ve already contacted the folks at Fort Campbell for next year,” said Reeves.

Reeves said that running alongside Volkman was inspirational.

“We would run 10 to 15 miles on the weekend to prepare for this run, and he would take no excuses; there was no BS, just get out there and do it,” said Reeves. “I want to be in my 40s and running a 57-minute ten-miler. He’s pretty darn incredible.”

Volkman added that the key to the team’s success was the satisfaction each soldier had when running.

“You need to be relaxed and enjoy running,” said Volkman. “Speed comes after your body finds its natural gait which only comes after a lot of miles.”

The 30th Annual Army Ten-Miler is slated for October 12, 2014.
