MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - The Community Counseling Center aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River offers therapy opportunities for individual Marines, their dependents and their families.
The center is staffed with licensed clinical social workers to provide assessment, referral therapy and case management for individuals, couples and groups.
Different services the center provides to Marines and their families are therapy, referral services and case management services.
“The Marine Corps envisions a totally fit and ready corps,” said Cheryl Corbin, clinical program manager. “A Corps in which Marines and family members cope with stress early, and readily with easy access to counseling and prevention services.”
The Community Counseling Center was activated in September of this year in response to a need for services focused on prevention and early detection of issues related to stress.
“Intervention with issues such as interpersonal relationships and marital problems are what we set our focus on,” said Corbin. “Other areas we focus on are stress management, parenting skills and grief and loss.”
The Community Counseling Center activated Sept. 30 as part of the Headquarters Marine Corps ‘reset’ program.
“Traditionally, general counseling services have been provided by Family Advocacy,” said Corbin. “In an effort to reduce stigma and improve access and timeliness of services, general counseling will now be provided by the Community Counseling Center.”
The licensed clinical specialists will provide non-medical counseling.
Services that are needed for fit for duty work-ups, disability, or medical discharge will continue to be handled through Naval Hospital Mental Health located on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
