Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 and Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron faced off during a field meet Friday here.

This year, both squadrons were predicting decisive victories after last year’s meet ended in a draw, resulting in both squadrons having to share the trophy throughout the year.

“This type of event builds unit cohesion among the units which is great – even though it gets a little competitive,” said Staff Sgt. Laura Johnson with H&HS who participated in the all-ranks relay for the squadron. “It was real neat to compete against everyone else.”

Marines of all ranks and military occupational specialties formed teams for their respective squadrons and competed in events including volleyball, soccer, tug of war, a pull-up competition, a 7-ton pull, and relay races.

“It is inspirational to see everyone getting along and involved,” said Pfc. Jacqueline Rader, a food services Marine with H&HS who competed in the “dizzy izzy,” a race where Marines sprinted 50 meters to a baseball bat, placed their foreheads on the bat handle and spun around it 10 times before sprinting back. “The dizzy izzy was hilarious to compete in and it was a lot of fun to see all the Marines fall and try to make their way back.”

Pfc. Kathy Vang cheered the participants on from the sidelines to keep competitors pumped up.

“All the Marines are so competitive that makes this that much more fun to watch,” said Vang, an administration clerk with MWHS-2. “It’s all about everyone having fun and it looked like everyone had great sportsmanship throughout the events.”

In a near repeat of last year’s meet, the opponents entered the final event dead even on score. The final event, a relay race between the leadership of both squadrons, would determine the ultimate outcome.

“They left it up to the old guys to finish the competition,” said Lt. Col. Charles J. Basham, commanding officer of H&HS. “Everyone did the best they could up to the final event and that is all we ask of our Marines.”

Lt. Col. Alan Solter, commanding officer of MWHS-2, and Basham kicked off the relay before handing off the batons to their sergeants major. Sgt. Maj. Scott. D. Grade, MWHS-2 and Sgt. Maj. David Eldridge, H&HS, were neck and neck as they passed the batons on to the squadrons’ executive officers who were required to complete 20 push-ups prior to beginning their portion of the relay. Ultimately, Maj. Robert Rich, MWHS-2, gained the advantage over Maj. Robert E. Carlson Jr., H&HS, securing the win and the trophy for MWHS-2.

“At the end of the day, we are all doing the same mission and helping each other out,” said Solter. But ultimetly, explained Solter, MWHS-2 edged out its opponent by just a few push-ups.
