TORII STATION, Japan – On a clear and sunny day, the Okinawa Chapter Sergeant Audie Murphy Club inducted a soldier into the organization Sept. 26 at Torii Station’s flag pole.

Sgt. 1st Class Raymond Peredo, a first sergeant assigned to Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery (Regiment), received an Audie Murphy certificate officially welcoming him into the one of the Army’s premier organizations for noncommissioned officers.

During the ceremony Peredo thanked everyone in attendance and ensured the audience of soldiers and civilians that although he stood alone the award goes beyond his personal accomplishment.

“I want every soldier to know that you too can achieve what I have done,” said Peredo. “This isn’t just about me it’s dedicated to all the soldiers I’ve come in contact with past and present,” he added.

Command Sgt. Maj. Steven L. Payton, command sergeant major for U.S. Army Japan, was on hand to present Peredo his award. Payton told the audience he looks to see more Audie Murphy inductees from within the 10th Regional Support Group.

“This organization was created to recognize the NCO and I know there are many of you in this formation, who have what it takes to join this fine NCO we are recognizing today,” said Payton.

According to the Audie Murphy website the Audie Murphy club dates back to 1986 at Fort Hood, Texas. The club expanded in 1991 to include chapters at Army installations at Fort Riley, Kan., Fort Sill, Okla., Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Polk, La., and Fort Carson, Colo.

SAMC inducts Army noncommissioned officers whose leadership achievements and performance favor special recognition by its local chapter. The noncommissioned officer must display leadership qualities in several areas to include personal concern for the needs, training, development, and welfare of soldiers and the concern for families of soldiers.

If an noncommissioned officer meets the prerequisites, he or she is then recommended by their perspective chain of command to participate in a future board preceding.
