YOKOSUKA, Japan - Fleet Activities, Yokosuka’s Nile C. Kinnick Red Devils overcame four fumbles in the first half to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 35-0 victory over the visiting Robert D. Edgren Eagles at Berkey Field, Aug. 30.

While piling up a total of 459 yards offense, the Red Devils defensive team held the Eagles to only 43 yards total offense. Defensive ends DeAnthony Evans and Rhyne Yates led all defensive players with 6 and 4 tackles, respectively.

“Today, we took a great big step forward, but a small step backwards,” said varsity head football coach Dan Joley. “We got off to a great start in the first half scored 28 points but we also had to overcame a few turnovers. There were a few miscues but hey, we are only going to get better in the long run.”

Quarterback Dustin Wilson was nine of 14 for 139 yards, with a 21 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marcel Daniels as well as 11 carries for 29 yards and one rushing score. Wide receiver Greg Bacon caught five passes for 80 yards and running back Latandre Paylor again led the running attack with a career high 218 yards on 27 carries and 3 touchdowns. Despite the numbers, Paylor was not satisfied with his performance, due to three fumbles.

“This was a bad game for me,” said Paylor. “I cannot turn the ball over like I did today in future games. I know I have to do a better job of protecting the football.”

The coaching staff agreed, but was by no means pointing fingers at only Paylor.

“We’ve got to have better play from our linebackers for next week,” said junior varsity head coach Wilson. “We had a couple of missed plays and missed tackles and on the defensive line, I think we need to be crisper with our rips so we don’t give up plays which are ran up the middle. But overall, I couldn’t be more pleased with the overall defensive play today. I saw several good things that we did right also. Guys swarmed to the ball, everyone got to play and everyone contributed.”

Up next for the Red Devils is the 2012 defending Far East Division I champion Yokota Panthers. Nile C. Kinnick is seeking to snap a 28-game, 14-season losing streak to the Panthers; they’ve not beaten Yokota since a 28-0 win on Oct. 16, 1998.

“The kids are excited,” said Joley. “We’ve been talking about this since last year. So, we’re going to come to practice next Tuesday ready to go and hopefully we have something for Yokota this year.”

It is possible according to Joley that the Red Devils may have possibly looked over Edgren with anticipation of facing last year’s champs.

“It could be, but I don’t think so. I think Edgren is not a bad football team; they have some good players as well. I just think that anytime you turn the ball over, you put yourself in a bad situation. Even still, there were some great individual efforts tonight.”

Nile C. Kinnick will host the Yokota Panthers at Berkey Field, Sept. 6.
