FORT HOOD, Texas - The Fort Hood Family Housing’s 2013 Golf Fore Education Tournament successfully raised more than $23,000 to benefit the children of military families and their neighboring community Friday, Sept. 13, thanks to 95 registered golfers, and 27 corporate sponsors and local business contributions.

The Killeen Independent School District Education Foundation and The Military Child Education Coalition both received funds to assist in their missions to advance education.

“Every year we support two organizations,” said Marvin Williams, Fort Hood Family Housing director of property management, “both of which are near and dear to Fort Hood Housing.”

The MCEC is a nonprofit organization focused on ensuring quality educational opportunities for all military children affected by mobility, family separation and transition.

Fort Hood’s Family Housing also gave back to the community by promoting the growth and success of our surrounding community.

The KISD Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization working to enhance educational opportunities for students and teachers of Killeen public schools.

“The children, they are the real winners,” Williams said. “All the money raised goes directly to these foundations, and they support our children in so many ways.”

Golfers kept the cause in mind as they hit golf balls around the course in pursuit of greater opportunities for the local youth.

Education is the foundation of the future, said Hal Schiffman, tournament participant and KISD Education Foundation board of directors member. Accomplishment is based on preparation, and preparation is a component of education as well as in the game of golf.

This tournament touched home for many golfers.

“You can only do so much as a parent,” said Cynthia Adams, golfer and mother of three. “You teach them and guide them and then let them go off into the world. If you provide them with good schools and good programs, they will excel.”

Education is a number one priority, Adams said.

Seeing all the golfers on the course Friday confirmed to her people take education seriously and support a better future.

“You can only do so much as a parent,” said Adams. “You teach them and guide them and then let them go off into the world. If you provide them with good schools and good programs, they will excel.”

While they were there for a good cause, golfers and Fort Hood Family Housing made the most of an opportunity for fun.

Though education is no joke, the tournament was held on Friday the 13th, a day widely associated with bad luck. Fort Hood Family Housing decided to have a themed hole in light of this day.

At the fourth hole on Dear Run a "Friday the 13th" Jason mask and hockey gloves were placed for the golfers to wear while they attempted to drive the golf ball down range. The golfers found a hockey stick and another pair of gloves on the putting green to finish the hole.

“In the spirit of Friday the 13th, that was our way of saying ‘let’s just have fun out here on the golf course,'” Williams said.

All in all, it was a lucky day for both military children and the Fort Hood community alike.

“It was a phenomenal way to support our children,” Williams said. “It’s so great to see so many folks care about supporting our education systems as well as the students.”

Luckily the 2013 Golf Fore Education tournament was a huge victory for local school-age kids due to the charitable contributions of the soldier and civilian golfers, corporate sponsors, local businesses and Fort Hood Family Housing.
