MANDAN, N.D. - A newly opened Walmart store in Mandan, N.D., made a number of charitable contributions to the community in which it now operates, including the state's military community, Sept. 11.

Store manager Andrew Coppersmith presented Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general, with a donation of $2,000 for the North Dakota National Guard Foundation, which supports local military families.

"We are extremely appreciative of Walmart's generous contribution and all the local businesses and organizations that continue to support the North Dakota National Guard Foundation," Sprynczynatyk said. "These funds provide valuable services for our Soldiers, Airmen and their families.

Sprynczynatyk also presided over a "moment of silence" to remember the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and the military members killed in the Global War on Terrorism during the store's grand opening ceremony.

"Today, we remember those that lost their lives during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. We also thank those military members who have served in missions abroad since that day. We want to ensure we continue to care for our military family before, during and after deployments. The donation Walmart has made today is one way of doing that," he said.

Sprynczynatyk's remarks were followed by Coppersmith signing a "Statement of Support" with retired U.S. Navy Reserve Capt. Robert O. Wefald and other representatives of the North Dakota Committee for the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The Statement of Support confirms the Mandan Walmart store has joined other employers in pledging their support of their employees who are members of the National Guard or Reserve.

ESGR is a Department of Defense agency that seeks to promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees.

North Dakota National Guard members and their families are supported by programs offered through the North Dakota National Guard Foundation, including the North Dakota Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (ND-TAPS) and the North Dakota National Guard Emergency Relief Fund (ERF).

ND-TAPS supports the national TAPS initiative and provides services to those who have lost a loved one serving in the Armed Forces. The funds are used to cover transportation costs for families of fallen service members as they travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual national TAPS program on Memorial Day weekend.

ERF provides financial support in sudden and unforeseen emergency situations for North Dakota National Guard members and their families, who may be facing illness, accident recovery, fire, theft or natural disasters.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the North Dakota National Guard Foundation has no paid employees and hires no professional fundraisers. It relies on volunteer assistance and donations from those concerned about military members and their families.
