Story by Staff Sgt. Andrew Porch

2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

FORT CARSON, Colo. – The grilled sizzled as the scent of burgers wafted through the air and the sound of children’s laughter echoed throughout the parking lot during a family day hosted by Leadership of Company C, 2nd Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, on Fort Carson, Colo., Aug. 16.

Soldiers, family members and friends of “Comanche” Company enjoyed a free fun filled evening of horseshoes, tug-o-war, a football throw, dunk-tank and a bouncy house.

It is going great, said Sgt. Daniel Proctor, combat engineer, Company C. There was a great turn out and everyone really looks like they are having a great time. The kids are having a blast.

Leadership put the event on with one goal in mind, unit cohesion.

The soldiers get to know each other outside of work, said 1st Lt. August Pope, platoon leader, Company C. Coming to these events allows soldiers to meet someone outside of their immediate work zone. It broadens the avenues soldiers have when they need to talk to someone about a problem.

Pope also spoke on the importance of the families meeting each other.

“They are going to be the support network for each other,” said Pope. Whatever issues come up, they still have the soldiers, family member and Family Readiness Group; people they can rely on if they have any problems.

While children played in the bouncy house, the adults took the time to get to know one another.

“It is very important for unit cohesion,” said Proctor. “These guys know who they are working with downrange and their families are comfortable knowing that their soldiers are close and depend on each other.”

This type of event was a first for the Comanche leadership and soldiers but leadership said it will not be the last.

"The Cherokee Family Day was an immense success,” said Capt. Derric Grimes, commander, Company C. “ Not only did everyone have a good time, but we were able to put out some great information to the families with regards to the upcoming deployment. We plan to schedule another event for the families run by the FRG for the upcoming holiday season after the soldiers deploy, again at no cost to the Cherokee families."
