YOKOSUKA, Japan - The play, “No Zebras, No Excuses” landed on Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka shores for two performances at the Benny Decker Theater, July 26.

The performance is an innovative approach to bystander intervention and sexual assault prevention training (SAPR) according to Ashley Smith, a sexual assault victims advocate, counselor, and one of the actresses in the show.

“What we’re trying to do is to get rid of this bystander idea,” said Smith. “We want people to support their own against attacks by (sexual) predators to make sure those predators aren’t able to continue to do the terrible things that they’ve been doing.”

According to Smith, the goal of the show is to present SAPR training in a manner that takes the focus away from predators and empowers bystanders, giving them tools to prevent an assault.
The production crew defines a zebra as the animal that stands there and watches a lion attack another zebra in the herd and does nothing to prevent that attack. The zebra represents a bystander and the lion represents a predator.

The show presents seven skits that show the effects of sexual assaults on the victims and their friends and presents the latest statistics.

According to Smith, one in three women and one in eight men in the military will be sexually assaulted at some point in their careers, which is higher than in the civilian population.

One in four women will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime; acquaintances commit 70 percent of violence against women; 80 percent of sexual assaults survivors were attacked before their 25th birthday; rapists average committing six rapes – according to the No Zebra’s And More website.

Sailors in attendance appreciated the show and liked the fact that this wasn’t the typical Navy training program.

“A lot of (SAPR) training is ‘death by PowerPoint,’ and you come in and you’re tired from your shift and the last thing you want to do is pay attention to another PowerPoint and another droll voice,” said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Thomas Thatcher, assigned to FLEACT, Yokosuka Security Department. “ These guys are up in your face, they’re swearing at you, they’re putting up real situations, so I think by instilling actual emotions and consequences into these scenarios drives the training home more effectively.”
