KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Serving your country for liberty and freedom is not something everyone can say they do, but for Army Staff Sgt. Rodney Almario, a combat medic, it is something he has always wanted to do. Almario, a San Diego native, is currently serving in Afghanistan as a Warrior Recovery Center liaison, in Regional Command (South), Kandahar Airfield.

“The Army is a family tradition that has been passed from fathers to sons in my family, and I joined to support my family,” said Almario.
For centuries, men and women have fought to preserve freedoms, but what is that driving force behind their commitment to serve? Almario said, “What makes him strong” is his family and friends.

“My family support from my wife and kids is what makes me strong,” he said. “They keep me motivated, so thank you (family) for your support and the care packages.”

Almario works as the lead LNO for 1st Armored Division, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Soldiers.

His mission involves handling all patients who come from the Role 3 Hospital at KAF due to battlefield injuries or illnesses.

“I make sure they receive proper medical care and track all of their patient updates until they are ready to be discharged and continue the mission,” said Almario. “When talking to these Soldiers, you have to have an open mind and try to help them understand that they are not alone; but this is what I like about my job, helping.”
