BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Soldiers of the 87th United States Army Reserve Command – East, the “Golden Acorn,” welcomed a new command sergeant major during a change-of-responsibility ceremony held in Birmingham, Ala., on Aug. 10.
With the traditional passing of the noncommissioned officer sword, Command Sgt. Maj. Jay Preston succeeded Command Sgt. Maj. Rossie Peters as the 87th ARSC’s senior enlisted soldier.
“It is my sincere gratitude to have served with the 87th ARSC and the Army as a whole,” said Peters. Following the change-of-responsibility ceremony, Peters retired from the U.S. Army Reserve after 35 years of service.
The 87th ARSC’s Commander, Brig. Gen. Peter Bosse, said it was an honor to have served with Peters during the Command Sergeant Major’s 35-year career.
“I have been privileged over the years to see soldiers grow and develop, each soldier is magnificent. Their discipline and dedication to this country is truly an affair of the heart; and there is truly no better time to be a soldier…,” said Peters. “…but there is a season and time for us all to say our farewells, and today is mine.”
Bosse also said he and the soldiers of the 87th ARSC were excited to start a new chapter under the guidance of the newly appointed Preston.
“I want to say thank you to all the soldiers and officers who have made me feel welcome here,” said Preston. “But now it is time to get ready and get to work.”
Preston left active duty service and joined the Army Reserves in 1979. His most recent assignment was as the senior enlisted advisor with the 335th Signal Command. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy.
