CAMP SABALU-HARRISON, Afghanistan – The 18th Military Police Brigade held an assumption of command ceremony here July 29, to welcome the new commander to the team.

U.S. Army Col. Zane Jones, a native of Prattville, Ala., assumed command of the most decorated military police brigade in the U.S. Army. He acknowledged the accomplishments of the storied brigade and said he is thankful for the opportunity to command it.

The 18th MP Bde. was activated May 20, 1966 on Fort Meade, Md. Soldiers assigned have deployed in support of the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom.

“It is a high privilege and deep honor to serve these soldiers, this Task Force, and the Afghan people. As we begin the final phases of our great mission, we will continue to work hard every day – together and in harmony, to ensure the success of our partnership,” said Jones.

In June, the Sembach, Germany-based brigade took responsibility of Task Force Vigilant in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Since then, its soldiers have provided assistance to the Afghan National Army to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan.

Air Force Brig. Gen. Balan Ayyar, Combined Joint Interagency Task Force 435 Commanding General, presided over the ceremony. He shared his thoughts with the brigade soldiers and the ANA leadership in attendance.

“As I look at your history and the banners, I’m confident that the days and months ahead will be filled with the kind of storied performance that has made history,” said Ayyar.

“The resiliency against terrorism and insurgency in detention operations is resident in the important mission of training, advising and assisting the MP Guard Command of the Afghan National Army,” said Ayyar.

In his comments, Jones assured the senior leaders of the ANA that the U.S. armed forces are devoted to the success of the mission.
“Together we will continue our partnership and commitment to creating a positive climate of community, team building, precision, competence and excellence,” he said.
