CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The Marine Raider Association will hold it’s annual Raider Banquet at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside in Wilmington, S.C., on Aug. 17, 2013.
The banquet is held in order to bridge the heritage the Marine Raiders and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command bring to the history of the Marine Corps.
During the banquet, the Commandant of the Marine Corps General James F. Amos, is expected to speak to both the surving Marine Raiders and Marines of MARSOC on the important heritage the Raiders brought to the Marine Corps in being the model for what would be to become special operations.
Of the approximately 600,000 Marines who served during World War II, only around 8,000 were chosen to become Marine Raiders. Four Marine Raider Battalions were formed in 1942 to operate deep behind enemy lines, but were disbanded in 1944. The Marine Raider Battalions were the inspiration for what would become modern day special operations, with MARSOC joining the fold in 2006.
The night before banquet, the Marine Raiders will host a fish fry on the U.S.S. North Carolina in Wilmington, for the Marines and families of MARSOC with Maj. Gen. Mark A. Clark, commanding general, MARSOC, as the guest speaker.
