    Story by Capt. Monika Comeaux

13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command (13th ESC)

Six soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), visited the Belton Senior Activity Center Aug. 8.

The city of Belton is partnered with the unit; soldiers are involved in various activities with the locals throughout the year.

During this particular visit, the troops brought a HMMVW to show the elderly, allowed them to try on body armors and helmets, shared deployment stories and also recognized the center for their support during the unit’s last deployment to Afghanistan.

The Citizens for Soldiers group in the center works tirelessly to send care packages, cards and prayer cards to Fort Hood’s deployed personnel. The soldiers presented the center with certificates of appreciation for the support the 13th SC(E) received while downrange.

“I help … with … [the] cards whenever I can; we write to you all the time,” said Clarice M. Wick, 92, who has been visiting the center regularly for the past two years. She said she loved the chance to meet with the soldiers and see their gear up close.

“…I tried on that vest and never thought it was that heavy. I don’t know how you can do it, be out there, and carry all that equipment, especially the women,” she added.

World War II veteran mortar man John T. Hickerson, 92, thought the visit was interesting. “I still remember the helmets and uniforms we wore. Of course we did not have anything heavy like that. The heaviest we had to carry was mortar shells.”

The visit “was a lot of fun,” said Spc. Kathleen Hayashi, an intelligence analyst with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary). “We got to talk a lot with people who are putting together the care packages and they wanted to know what it is that soldiers would like to receive.”

Hayashi said she was amazed “how much work they actually do and how much they actually care about getting troops a little bit of home.”

Hayashi and her fellow soldiers all stated, that they would volunteer if the opportunity arises to visit with the senior activity center again.
