PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The competition was held at the depot’s combat fitness center for Department of Defense employees and service members.

Female and male divisions were separated into age groups where competitors were judged based on strength compared to their weight.

During the competition, participants each selected their own weight to be used while Jonathan Hutchson, Marine Corps Community Services fitness supervisor, ensured proper form was executed.
The heaviest weight out of three allowed attempts was used to determine the competitor’s final score.

“Bench press competitions serve more as an individual’s contest against oneself, said Chief Petty Officer Mike Davis, 2nd Battalion Aid Station corpsman and native of Nevada, Iowa. “Through such events your able to test your limitations with a measure of pure strength.”

Tri-Command Bench Press Competition Series held by MCCS is hosted roughly every three months alternating between the Air Station and Parris Island.

“It’s great to have events like these because it gives people the chance to build camaraderie, boost morale and compete with friends while meeting other people who share a common interest,” said Hutchson, a native of Beaufort.

Overall winners during the competition include Petty Officer 3rd Class Blake Taylor, Naval Hospital Beaufort corpsman, in the male division and Iris Roman, MCCS recreation assistant, in the female division.

The MCCS fitness centers aboard Fightertown and Parris Island provides Marines and families with classes, special events, personal trainers and various resources to live active healthy lives.
