FORT LEE, Va. - Monica Bertoli and Dianna Williamson were on temporary duty for training in Phoenix recently when they unexpectedly found themselves assisting victims of a highway accident.

“I’m here, I’m trained, and I need to help,” Bertoli said she was thinking when she saw the accident. “Not stopping to help never even crossed my mind.”

The two Defense Contract Management Agency quality assurance specialists were traveling on an interstate when they were among the first people at the scene of an overturned vehicle. A mother and four children were in a sport-utility vehicle that had rolled onto an embankment, coming to rest on its roof.

“We just got out and went to work,” said Williamson. “I heard a baby crying somewhere and knew I had to find that baby.”

Williamson credits college courses in nursing, CPR and first aid for helping her to focus during the accident response. She also credits her dad. “My father was a cop and he taught me a lot while I was a child.”

Bertoli began administering aid to one of the children as Williamson looked for the baby and helped the mother who was stuck in the overturned vehicle. Using materials on hand, including a t-shirt and bottled water, the two slowed the injured child’s bleeding and cleaned his wounds. Additional help began to arrive, and the other children and mother were removed from the vehicle.

Bertoli and Williamson stayed with the family and helped calm the mother until emergency personnel arrived.

The two DCMA employees were in Phoenix for the QUAL 101 course. Bertoli is a second year Keystone at the DCMA Santa Ana, Calif., office. She’s also an Air Force Reservist and former Air Force self-aid and buddy care instructor. Williamson is out of DCMA Detroit.
