CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army soldiers with 5th Kandak, 4th Brigade, 215th Corps, received engineer equipment and motor transport equipment training from Marines with General Support Combat Logistics Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, aboard Forward Operating Base Delaram II in Helmand province, Afghanistan, from June 29 to July 6.

Seventeen ANA soldiers completed the seven-day training syllabus that involved either learning how to operate a forklift or drive a tractor-trailer.

“The ANA soldiers immediately became engaged with the equipment and the Marine instructors,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jeremy Pelham, the GS CLC engineer equipment officer, and one of the five Marine instructors who conducted the training. “They displayed a strong urge to prove their capabilities and assist one another in learning their new equipment sets.

“Before the training there was only one soldier who could proficiently operate the forklift and one that could drive and operate the tractor-trailer set,” explained Pelham, a New Market, Tenn., native. “They now have 11 trained on the forklift and six on the tractor-trailer.”

Each Afghan soldier received a certificate of achievement for completing their respective courses during a graduation ceremony July 9.

Overall, the training provided the Afghan soldiers with the knowledge to properly employ and maintain the motor transport and engineer equipment they possess.

“Not only has the training drastically increased their depth,” said Pelham, “but it has once again shown that the ANA has the capability to be self-sustaining in the future.”
