YOKOSUKA, Japan - The Lady Devil softball team from Kinnick High School attended the Far East athletic tournament at Atusgi Naval base, May 19. These girls have been looking forward to this tournament all year and they came into the tournament with an undefeated record.

The Lady Devils played in the first game of pool play on Monday morning and beat the Kubasaki Dragons in a close game 6-5.
The game was neck and neck. Both teams scored five runs in the 7th inning with the 90-minute time limit expired. Kinnick had an advantage being the home team so they had the last at bat. The Lady Devils got the RBI they needed when Gabby Huezo hit a ball to right field.

The rest of the games were canceled on Monday due to rain so Kinnick was first in their pool. The Lady Devils had to play Kubasaki again because the Dragons had defeated the Falcons from Seoul, Korea. The second game was not as close with Kinnick winning 4-2.

Since The Lady Devils were still undefeated they only had to play one more game Wednesday morning in order to advance to the championship game. Kinnick took on the Guam panthers and finished the game early. Kinnick’s outfield was doing their job catching almost every ball that went their way. Guam was mercy ruled in the 5th inning with the score being 12-2.

The Lady Devils were able to relax all day and watch the other softball games to see who they would be playing in the championship game. Kubasaki lost to Kadena finishing fourth in the tournament. Kadena played Guam right after to fight for the chance to play the Lady Devils. Although Guam defeated Kadena the previous day, Kadena was able to take advantage of the mistakes Guam made and had a sweet victory. Guam finished third and the following game determined that the Seoul Falcons finished fifth and the Yokota Panthers came in sixth place.

The Kadena Panthers faced the Kinnick Lady Devils in the championship game. The game was extremely close throughout. Both teams had good defense keeping the score 0-0 the first few innings. Kadena was able to score a run but Kinnick again had the last chance at bat. It was the seventh inning and it was Kinnick’s last chance to remain undefeated. If Kinnick lost, they would need to play Kadena again for a tie breaker.

After Danaisia King got a hit that landed her on first, Sierra Lee successfully bunted and an error by the Dragons pitcher allowing King to advance to third base and Lee to make it safely to first base.

Grace Huezo knocked in a run with a base hit, which brought King home and tied the score with no outs for the Lady Devils. Tenley Getschman hit the ball safely into the outfield, bringing Lee home and ending the game with the Lady Devils defeating the Kadena Panthers 2-1.

“I felt confident going into the tournament because of the hard work that everyone in the team put into this season and it was our year to win it,” said Elizabeth Farrelly, senior and captain of the softball team, “Afterward I couldn’t believe that we finally reached the goal we set out from day one. And it felt amazing to finally win.”

Elizabeth Farrelly has been on the team for three years and after winning the championship game she told her teammates this was the best way to end her senior year. However, it was no less special for first year players on the team.

“I could see the confident look in my teammates’ eyes, even the eyes of my coach. I knew without a doubt we were going to win. Now that doesn’t mean I wasn’t nervous at a couple points but I knew we would take home the gold,” said Madison McCorkle, junior and first-time softball player, “After winning the tournament I knew that this was one of the greatest moments that could happen to us. We worked hard all year to achieve this victory. We are the Devils and we are proud.”

Far East tournament is annual competition between teams from Department of Defense Dependent Education Activity Schools in the Asia-Pacific region. 2010 was the first year fast pitch softball was a part of the tournament and this is the first time Kinnick has won. This year is also the best record Kinnick softball has ever had, an undefeated 27-0 and they remained undefeated through the Far East tournament. The Lady Devils hope to win again next year.
