SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras - The American ambassador to Honduras visited the remote village of Barra Patuca, Gracias a Dios, June 25, while service members of Joint Task Force-Bravo and the Honduran Ministry of Health conducted a medical readiness training exercise in the region.

Lisa Kubiske, the American ambassador to Honduras, not only visited with the medical team, she reached out to the people of Barra Patuca by having a town hall meeting and bringing books to the local school.

"Mrs. Kubiske brought much needed reading material to Lempira," said Bernabe Kirinton, the school's principal. "On average, our teachers have about 40 students per class and we don't have enough books for all of them."

Lempira is the name of the school in Barra Patuca, where the inhabitants speak an indigenous language called Miskito and the only mode of transportation to the region is by boat or air.

"I can't explain to you how important it is to have an education and to further it once your studies are completed here," said Kubiske to a class full of students. "One's education doesn't stop at 12th grade, but can be furthered in a university or vocational training, which will in turn help your people."

Ambassador Kubiske would bring more than 75 books of all reading levels to the school. She also walked the grounds of the make shift hospital were more than 1,040 patients were seen over a two-day period.

Kubiske is a United States diplomat with experience in Latin America, China/Hong Kong, and Washington, D.C. Prior to her nomination as ambassador, Kubiske served as deputy chief of mission of the United States Mission in Brazil.
